Samyang 50mm F1.4 AF Sony FE II Lens: An Improved Second Generation

The Samyang 50mm F/1.4 AF Sony FE II is a luminous prime lens, designed for full frame as well as APS-C cameras using Sony E-mount. This model succeeds the 50mm F1.4 AF, which was Samyang’s initial autofocus lens launched in 2016.

The lens’ optical construction has been enhanced for its second generation, now boasting 11 elements in 8 groups (2 ASP, 3 HR, and 1 ED) to ensure maximum sharpness. Moreover, the housing is more compact, measuring 88.9 mm in length and weighing a light 420 grams. With these attributes, it is the smallest and lightest large-aperture 50mm lens available for Sony FE, as of its November 2021 announcement.

The 50mm prime lens is especially apt for portrait, architecture, or documentary photography due to its diverse application. The angle of view is 45.7 when used with a full frame camera, or 31.1 with APS-C.

The lens’ rapid autofocus operates smoothly and quietly thanks to Samyang’s Linear STM (Stepping Motor), an appreciated feature by both still photographers and videographers. The lens also minimizes focus breathing, and it allows you to take stunning photos with beautiful background blur at fully open aperture. The 9 aperture blades result in a natural bokeh. With a minimum focus distance of 40 cm, the lens can be utilized in a wide range of scenarios, such as close-up portraits or food photography.
