Some Sony exec probably misheard a consultant saying something about how all cameras in the future will be phone cameras and immediately ordered this camera into production. Behold! The Sony QX1, an interchangeable-lens E-mount camera that depends on a wireless connection to a phone or tablet running proprietary software to work. Advantages: the sensor module is fully mobile, so you can move it independent of the device used to control it, which is great if you’re shooting in awkward situations. In fact, this would be a greatcamera for film copyingor dronework. Disadvantages: while you can technically take a picturewithout interfacing withthe app, you lose any ability to adjust settings other than turning the flash on and off. And the official app- Sony’s Imaging Edge- is typical camera manufacturer software, so it’s not exactly a work of art. But once you’ve got it set up, everything works well, and image quality is excellent. The sensor is an APS-C unit that shoots 20mp stills and 1080p30 video; records to a micro SD card (a 32gb card is included). Also included: battery, USB cable for in-camera charging, and original box.
